Tadias Addis had an interview with artist Yonas Getachew. Cinema is a universal language that cuts across cultures and borders. It’s a popular art form that, when used wisely, has the potential to shape a culture. In Ethiopia, we are blessed to have untold stories, unknown locations, a rich culture, and a receptive public who likes films in their native language. Though the local film industry is making progress toward establishing a film culture, there is still more work to be done. There are no film schools or cinemas in the area that show a wide range of films.
Addis Ababa also has few film festivals compared to other cities throughout the world. Through this Suk, we intend to build such a film festival, as well as provide an art house/world cinema to curious visitors. The program’s three components are filmmaking, casting, and movies. Visitors can direct, shoot, and act in a short film that revolves around the Suk.
