The acclaimed Ethiopian artist Nesanet Workneh hosts the entertaining family game show with a prize. It's not that modern historians of the medieval Mediterranean, Europe, and Africa were unaware of Ethiopian-European interactions; the problem was that the power balance was reversed.
Ethiopia, according to the traditional account, was weak and in peril in the face of external forces, particularly the Mamluks in Egypt, so they sought military support from their Christian neighbors to the north, the burgeoning kingdoms of Aragon (modern-day Spain) and France.
However, the real story, which was buried in plain sight in medieval diplomatic letters, has yet to be pieced together.
