Starting from 1959, when Cyril VI, the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, granted autonomy to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, this religious institution has been under the leadership of an Ethiopian Patriarch-Catholicos of Eritrea, who also holds the title of Abuna.
The official titles of the Abuna include Ichege of the See of Saint Taklahaimanot, Catholicos, Archbishop of Axum, and Patriarch of Ethiopia.
