Hailemichael Getnet, also recognized as H. Haile Roots, had an upbringing that didn’t foreshadow his eventual path. Born on September 25, 1982, his early years spent at Selassie Cathedral School and later at Minilik II Secondary School were not indicative of his future as a musician. During his time in Addis Abeba, his childhood ambitions leaned toward becoming a renowned soccer player or a painter, with music not even on the radar. It was only in 1993, at a reggae event hosted by the late DJ Z, that Haile Roots underwent a transformative experience that sparked his unwavering passion for singing. From that moment onwards, reggae music consumed his thoughts and aspirations.
