Today, in the capital city of Addis Ababa and the historic town of Gondar in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia, a vibrant celebration known as Timkat is taking place.
Timkat is a beautiful ecclesiastical tradition that involves colorful processions on open water, with traditional canoes carrying participants to the Ketera site. Throughout the country and among Ethiopian Orthodox Church followers in the diaspora, Timket is joyously celebrated each year. In 2019, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognized Timkat as intangible heritage, solidifying its significance as the Ethiopian Epiphany.
