Production of video movies began in Ethiopia not long after the Dergue dictatorship was toppled in 1991.
Since then, Ethiopia has seen the local film industry expand quickly as young filmmakers use digital filming techniques to create fiction and documentary films. The rise of audiovisual output intensified as a result of the technological revolution. Present-day Ethiopia produces 100 feature films annually, ranging from fiction to factual stories.
