For the first time, I am the best man

In a wedding ceremony, a groomsman or usher is one of the groom’s male attendants and is responsible for delivering the first wedding speech. It is a privilege to be picked as a groomsman by the groom, who usually picks close friends and family members. The groom usually chooses one of his groomsmen to serve as best man. In the case of a large wedding, the groom may invite additional male friends and relatives to act as ushers without taking part in the ceremony; their sole task will be to escort visitors to their seats prior to the ceremony. For exceptionally large weddings, ushers may also be hired.
The swordsmen of the sword honor guard replace the groomsmen at a military officer’s wedding. They are usually groomsmen’s close buddies who have served alongside him. They are in charge of creating the classic saber arch that the newlyweds and their guests will pass through. The phrase ‘groomsmen’ was first documented in 1698, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, but both ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ are Old English terms. The groomsmen’s most apparent role is to help guests in finding their seats before to the wedding ceremony and to stand close to the groom throughout the ceremony. In addition, the groom may request assistance with planning celebratory events such as a bachelor party, also known as a stag-do or buck’s night; making the wedding pleasant for guests by chatting with people who are alone or dancing with unaccompanied guests or bridesmaids if the reception includes dancing; or providing practical assistance with gifts, luggage, or unforeseen complications. Groomsmen may also participate in regional or local traditions, such as adorning the newlyweds’ automobile.
