Thousands of Ethiopian Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr on Monday, despite rising religious tensions in the country.
Tens of thousands of Muslims gathered at Addis Ababa Stadium early in the morning to observe Eid prayers, according to Ethiopian state media reports.
In a press statement, Addis Ababa police said a brawl started by a few people in one of the city’s key Eid al-Fitr festival celebration zones resulted in property damage.
The statement didn’t say how much property was damaged or if the violence resulted in any human casualties.
According to footage circulating on social media, some Muslim worshippers in the city threw stones, prompting police authorities to retaliate with tear gas.
In other parts of Ethiopia, there have been no reports of Eid al-Fitr-related violence thus far.
