Kidist Birhane performs on a new clip

Agews, often referred to as agaws, are a Cushitic ethnic group from Ethiopia and Eritrea. They are a part of the Cushitic peoples as a whole, although their connections to the Qemant are the strongest. They communicate using Agaw languages, which are highly understood and belong to the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family. As a minority group, the Agaw experience considerable assimilation pressures in both Ethiopia and Eritrea, and their languages are categorically listed as critically endangered. Visitors and other observers believed that the Agaw people practiced a “Hebraic religion” similar to the Qemant, but many were Beta Israel Jews, and some practiced Ethiopian Orthodoxy. In previous ages, the number of people who converted to Islam was incredibly small. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of Agaw Beta Israel joined the Falash Mura and converted to Christianity (both willingly and forcibly), however many are now reverting back to Judaism.
