An American man’s average height is 5 feet, 9 inches (175.4 cm), whereas an American woman’s average height is 5 feet, 4 inches (162.6 centimeters). But as is well known, there is a wide range of heights, from the extremely tall to the really small. The Guinness World Records (GWR) crew has a history of thoroughly documenting extremes, and this one is no different. They categorize this as “shortest” as opposed to “smallest.” There are several classifications for “the world’s shortest human.” In addition to the world’s smallest man (alive) and world’s shortest lady, the same categories also apply to non-moving individuals (living). The head of Record Content Support at GWR, Mark McKinley, writes in an email that some of the shortest people are incapable of walking or standing. This means that when they are measured, rather than their height, they are lying down to get their length. He emphasizes that this measuring discrepancy necessitates the usage of distinct categories. Since measuring someone while they were lying down versus standing up would result in different measurements, we were unable to compare these two.
